Lyme Disease

  • What is it? Lyme Disease is caused by a spirochete (a cork screw shaped bacterium).
  • How is it transmitted? By a small red and black tick commonly known as the deer or bear tick. This is not the large tick typically found on dogs.

  • What does it affect? It is characterized by circular skin lesions with possible headaches, nausea or fever. In severe cases, arthritis in one or more joints and heart problems may develop.

  • What animals can potentially carry this? Any animal can move the tick from place to place. It is also possible to come in contact with this tick if you enjoy the outdoors in tall grasses and trees.
